Biography

Johann Abraham Peter Schulz was a musical polymath of the late 18th century, equally at home composing operas for the Prussian court as he was collecting and arranging the folk songs of the people. As the Kapellmeister for Prince Henry of Prussia, he moved in sophisticated circles, yet his most enduring work possesses a simple, heartfelt quality that feels born from the soil. Schulz had a gift for melody that resonated deeply, turning poems into songs that people felt they had always known. His setting of Matthias Claudius's evening poem 'Der Mond ist aufgegangen' is a German cultural touchstone, a nightly lullaby for a nation. Similarly, his gentle, cascading tune for 'Ihr Kinderlein kommet' transformed a 18th-century poem into one of the world's most beloved Christmas carols, 'Oh, Come, Little Children.' In Schulz's music, the high ideals of the Enlightenment met the emerging emotional warmth of Romanticism.
