A punk lifer whose melodic songwriting and wry wit gave voice to a generation of skate kids and outsiders.
Joey Cape emerged from the sun-bleached suburbs of California to become a cornerstone of the 90s punk revival. As the frontman of Lagwagon, his voice—a blend of urgency and tunefulness—carried lyrics that swapped simple rebellion for introspective, often darkly humorous storytelling. While Lagwagon became a flagship act for Fat Wreck Chords, Cape never settled into a single lane. He built a parallel solo career defined by acoustic vulnerability, launched side projects like Bad Astronaut to explore more complex arrangements, and became a prolific producer for other bands. His work ethic and artistic integrity have made him a respected elder statesman in a scene that often eats its young, maintaining a deep, direct connection with fans through relentless touring and a vast catalog that documents a life lived in the trenches of independent music.
1965–1980
The latchkey kids. Raised during divorce, recession, and the end of the Cold War. Skeptical, self-reliant, media-literate. They invented indie culture, grunge, and the early internet — then watched the Boomers take credit.
Joey was born in 1966, placing them squarely in the Generation X. The events that shaped this generation — economic uncertainty, the end of the Cold War, and the rise of personal computing — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
