A Finnish filmmaker who conjures wildly original, high-concept action fantasies, from a dark Christmas myth to a one-man WWII revenge epic.
Jalmari Helander has a singular knack for taking a bizarre, almost childlike 'what if' scenario and executing it with deadpan seriousness and spectacular style. The Finnish director cut his teeth on inventive, award-winning commercials, a training ground for visual storytelling. His 2010 feature debut, 'Rare Exports', twisted Santa Claus into a terrifying ancient creature, becoming an instant cult holiday classic. He followed it with 'Big Game', a playful romp starring Samuel L. Jackson as a US President stranded in the Finnish wilderness. But it was 2022's 'Sisu' that fully unleashed his vision: a near-silent, hyper-violent WWII romp about a gold prospector defending his claim. The film was a global word-of-mouth hit, praised for its relentless pace and inventive action. Helander's work feels like pulp folklore, built on clear, compelling premises and delivered with a wry Finnish sensibility that has earned him the helm of a major Hollywood prequel.
1965–1980
The latchkey kids. Raised during divorce, recession, and the end of the Cold War. Skeptical, self-reliant, media-literate. They invented indie culture, grunge, and the early internet — then watched the Boomers take credit.
Jalmari was born in 1976, placing them squarely in the Generation X. The events that shaped this generation — economic uncertainty, the end of the Cold War, and the rise of personal computing — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
