Biography

Born Steven Demetre Georgiou in London, the man who would become Cat Stevens found early fame in the late 1960s with a string of gentle, introspective hits. His songs, like 'Wild World' and 'Father and Son,' captured a generation's search for meaning with a poetic touch. At the peak of his commercial success, a near-drowning experience and a profound spiritual awakening led him to convert to Islam in 1977, changing his name to Yusuf Islam and stepping away from the pop world for decades. He devoted himself to philanthropy and education, founding Muslim schools and engaging in humanitarian work. In a surprising turn for fans, he cautiously re-entered the realm of popular music in the 2000s, his voice weathered but his songcraft intact, offering a bridge between his two worlds and securing his place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Baby Boomers

1946–1964

The largest generation in history at the time. Shaped by postwar prosperity, the Vietnam War, the sexual revolution, and Watergate. They questioned every institution their parents built — then ran them.

Cat was born in 1948, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
