A blunt-speaking Conservative MP who championed mental health reform and represented her Thurrock constituency with gritty determination for 14 years.
Jackie Doyle-Price's political career was defined by a direct, no-frills approach that mirrored the industrial Essex constituency she served. Elected in the 2010 Conservative wave, she held Thurrock—a classic bellwether seat—through four general elections, navigating its shifting political tides. A former local government officer, she brought a practical focus to Westminster, earning a reputation as a hard-working backbencher unafraid to criticize her own party. Her most significant contribution came as the first-ever Minister for Mental Health, Inequalities, and Suicide Prevention, a role she used to push for greater parity between physical and mental health services. Despite losing her seat in the 2024 Labour landslide, her tenure was marked by a consistent advocacy for her constituents and a campaigner's zeal on issues from port security at the Thames estuary to support for veterans.
1965–1980
The latchkey kids. Raised during divorce, recession, and the end of the Cold War. Skeptical, self-reliant, media-literate. They invented indie culture, grunge, and the early internet — then watched the Boomers take credit.
Jackie was born in 1969, placing them squarely in the Generation X. The events that shaped this generation — economic uncertainty, the end of the Cold War, and the rise of personal computing — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
