An Irish actor who delivered one of television's most loathed villains, then walked away from fame to pursue academia and theatre.
Jack Gleeson achieved a peculiar kind of fame: he was globally recognized and intensely disliked for a role he played with chilling precision. As the petulant, cruel King Joffrey Baratheon on 'Game of Thrones,' he crafted a character so convincingly vile that he became the show's ultimate love-to-hate figure. At the height of the series' cultural domination, Gleeson made a startling and deliberate choice. He stepped back from screen acting entirely, returning to his studies in philosophy and theology at Trinity College Dublin and focusing on experimental theatre with his Dublin-based company, Collapsing Horse. His return to screens years later was on his own terms, choosing eclectic projects that showcased a far wider range than the tyrant king who made his name.

Jack was born in 1992, placing them squarely in the Millennials. The events that shaped this generation — the internet revolution, 9/11, and the 2008 financial crisis — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
