Biography

Isaac Albéniz was a child prodigy who ran away from home to tour as a concert pianist before he was a teenager, a restless spirit that defined his early life. His true legacy, however, was forged not on the stage but at the writing desk. After studying abroad and absorbing influences from across Europe, he turned his focus inward, deciding that the essence of Spanish music—the rhythms of flamenco, the melodies of folk songs—deserved a place in the highest echelons of classical composition. This ambition culminated in 'Iberia,' a monumental suite of twelve piano pieces written near the end of his life. More than mere imitation, 'Iberia' is a virtuosic and impressionistic evocation of Spanish landscapes and emotions, its technical demands so great that even Albéniz joked they were unplayable. Though he died at 48, his work became a cornerstone of Spanish musical nationalism, proving that national character could fuel artistic innovation of the highest order.

The Gilded Age

1860–1882

Born during or after the Civil War, they built industrial America — the railroads, the steel mills, the first skyscrapers. An era of massive wealth, massive inequality, and the belief that the future belonged to whoever could build it fastest.

Isaac was born in 1860, placing them squarely in The Gilded Age. The events that shaped this generation — world wars, depression, and rapid industrialization — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
