A former dentist who ruled Turkmenistan with an iron fist for 15 years, cultivating a bizarre personality cult while his nation remained isolated.
Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow rose from the role of a state dentist and health minister to become Turkmenistan's second president in 2006, following the death of the eccentric Saparmurat Niyazov. His rule, which lasted until 2022, was marked by a continuation of extreme authoritarianism, though he slightly dialed back some of his predecessor's more peculiar decrees. He fostered his own extravagant personality cult, starring in state-produced music videos, authoring books on subjects from medicine to horse breeding, and performing stunts like weightlifting and cycling. While the country's vast natural gas wealth funded grandiose construction projects in the capital, Ashgabat, ordinary citizens faced widespread poverty and severe restrictions on freedoms. In a choreographed transition, he handed the presidency to his son, Serdar, in 2022, but retained significant power as the head of the country's upper legislative house, ensuring the family's grip on the energy-rich desert state.

The largest generation in history at the time. Shaped by postwar prosperity, the Vietnam War, the sexual revolution, and Watergate. They questioned every institution their parents built — then ran them.
Gurbanguly was born in 1957, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
