Biography

Frederick, dubbed 'the Simple' by later historians, ascended the throne of Sicily under the shadow of his brother and a kingdom diminished by foreign intrigue. His reign was less about grand conquest and more about dogged survival in a geopolitical maze. He faced immediate challenges from the powerful Aragonese branch of his family and the ever-present Angevin claim to his island. Frederick's rule was a constant negotiation, involving strategic marriages—most notably to Constance of Aragon—and shifting alliances to preserve Sicilian autonomy. While his epithet suggests simplicity, his twenty-two-year rule demonstrated a persistent, if not always successful, effort to maintain the integrity of his realm against larger, more powerful neighbors.
