The enigmatic sonic architect behind Crystal Castles, whose distorted synthesizers and sampled screams defined a generation of chaotic electronic music.
Operating under the alias Ethan Kath, Claudio Palmieri was the hidden engine of the explosive electronic duo Crystal Castles. While vocalist Alice Glass became the chaotic face of the project, Kath was the mastermind in the studio, sculpting their signature sound from a bed of damaged video game consoles, punishing bass lines, and manipulated vocal samples. Hailing from Toronto, he channeled a DIY punk ethos into digital composition, creating lo-fi anthems that felt both nostalgic and violently futuristic. His production work constructed a world where childhood innocence collided with urban anxiety, providing the perfect fractured backdrop for Glass's ferocious performances. Though the band's legacy is complex, Kath's influence is undeniable, cementing him as a pivotal figure in the 2000s indie electronic scene who proved that raw emotion could be forged from circuit-bent machinery.
1981–1996
The first digital natives. Grew up with the internet, came of age during 9/11 and the 2008 crash. Highly educated, deeply indebted, slower to marry and buy houses. Redefined work, identity, and what it means to be an adult.
Ethan was born in 1982, placing them squarely in the Millennials. The events that shaped this generation — the internet revolution, 9/11, and the 2008 financial crisis — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.

His stage name, Ethan Kath, is reportedly derived from two characters from the film 'The Last Boy Scout'.
He was known for being intensely private, rarely giving interviews and often obscuring his face in early photos.
Many early Crystal Castles tracks were built using sounds from modified vintage Casio keyboards and video game hardware.
He released music under the solo moniker 'Dreams' after the dissolution of Crystal Castles.
“I build the skeleton of the track, and then we flesh it out.”
