A chief architect of Nazi terror, he oversaw the Gestapo and SD during the Holocaust's most brutal phase.
Ernst Kaltenbrunner, a towering Austrian lawyer with a scarred face, ascended from far-right radical circles to become one of the Third Reich's most feared administrators. His cold, bureaucratic efficiency caught Heinrich Himmler's eye, leading to his appointment in 1943 as head of the Reich Security Main Office, the sprawling nerve center of the SS that controlled the Gestapo, criminal police, and intelligence service. From that desk, Kaltenbrunner directed a vast machinery of repression, espionage, and genocide across occupied Europe. He was a regular attendee of the Wannsee Conference follow-ups, ensuring the 'Final Solution' was implemented, and his signature authorized countless executions. Captured after the war, he stood trial at Nuremberg, where his defense of merely following orders was rejected. He was the highest-ranking SS officer to be convicted and hanged for crimes against humanity.
