Biography

Reinhard Heydrich was the dark engine of the Nazi terror state. A former naval intelligence officer with a sharp intellect and a cold, predatory nature, he rose rapidly within the SS, becoming Heinrich Himmler’s principal deputy. Heydrich built the Sicherheitsdienst (SD), the Nazi Party's intelligence service, into a formidable instrument of fear. His most infamous act was presiding over the 1942 Wannsee Conference, where senior officials coordinated the 'Final Solution'—the systematic, industrialized murder of European Jewry. As Reich Protector of Bohemia and Moravia, he ruled with such brutal efficiency he was nicknamed 'the Butcher of Prague.' His death in 1942, from injuries sustained in a daring assassination by Czechoslovak agents, triggered horrific reprisals, including the obliteration of the village of Lidice. Heydrich’s legacy is one of monstrous innovation; he applied a chilling, administrative logic to the project of mass murder, making him one of history's most sinister figures.

Reinhard was born in 1904, placing them squarely in The Greatest Generation. The events that shaped this generation — world wars, depression, and rapid industrialization — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.

Did You Know?

He was an accomplished violinist, coming from a family of musicians.

Despite his Nazi ideology, there were rumors (never proven) that he had Jewish ancestry, which he deeply feared being exposed.

His assassination, Operation Anthropoid, was planned and executed by Czechoslovak agents trained by the British SOE.

Hitler posthumously awarded him the highest German order, the German Order, and gave him a lavish state funeral.

“Terror is the best political weapon for nothing drives people harder than a fear of sudden death.”
