A Norwegian double bassist and composer who blends deep, melodic grooves with pop sensibility, creating a fresh and atmospheric sound in modern jazz.
Ellen Andrea Wang operates from the low end up, using her double bass not just as an anchor but as a lead voice. Growing up in Søndre Land, Norway, she was immersed in music from a young age, eventually finding her calling in the instrument's resonant tones. She co-founded the band Pixel, a group that quickly gained attention for its energetic, genre-blurring approach to jazz, earning a Norwegian Grammy nomination. Wang's playing is both physically commanding and melodically inventive, often providing the central hook around which songs are built. This unique talent has made her a sought-after collaborator, leading to tours with percussion legends like Manu Katché and Marilyn Mazur, and even performances with Sting. With her project Closeness, she further refines her vision, crafting intimate, spacious soundscapes that highlight her skills as a composer and bandleader. Wang represents a new wave of European jazz musicians who are unafraid to incorporate electronic textures and song-like structures, all while maintaining the improvisational heart of the tradition.

Ellen was born in 1986, placing them squarely in the Millennials. The events that shaped this generation — the internet revolution, 9/11, and the 2008 financial crisis — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
