A stylish and thoughtful Formula One driver from Rome, his promising career was tragically cut short during testing.
Elio de Angelis was the last of a romantic breed: a gentleman racer from a wealthy Roman family who brought flair and intellect to the Formula One grid. Tall, handsome, and known for playing grand piano in the paddock, he earned the nickname 'The Last Gentleman' for his sportsmanlike conduct. He made his debut with Shadow in 1979 before finding a home at Lotus, where he secured both of his Grand Prix victories—in Austria in 1982 and, famously, in a tense, fuel-saving duel at Imola in 1985. A precise and smooth driver, more strategist than wild aggressor, he served as a steadying force at Lotus after the death of founder Colin Chapman. In 1986, a testing crash at the Paul Ricard circuit in France led to his death, silencing a talent many believed was yet to reach its peak.

The largest generation in history at the time. Shaped by postwar prosperity, the Vietnam War, the sexual revolution, and Watergate. They questioned every institution their parents built — then ran them.
Elio was born in 1958, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
