The original nature boy, a barefoot mystic whose hit song 'Nature Boy' and back-to-nature lifestyle presaged the 1960s counterculture.
eden ahbez appeared in Los Angeles like a prophet from another time, living under the first L in the Hollywood sign, eating raw fruits and vegetables, and wearing his hair and beard long. He was a living manifesto for a life in harmony with nature, decades before it became a movement. His moment in the sun came when Nat King Cole, after much persuasion, recorded ahbez's song "Nature Boy." Its haunting melody and enigmatic lyric—"The greatest thing you'll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return"—became a massive hit and an enduring standard. Though he never sought mainstream fame, ahbez continued to write and record music that blended jazz, exotica, and Eastern philosophy, becoming a spiritual godfather to the beatniks and later the hippies who walked the same California paths.
