The heroic goalkeeper whose stunning saves propelled Vietnam to its first major international football trophy, making him a national icon.
Dương Hồng Sơn's name is forever etched in Vietnamese football history for one magical tournament. Born in 1982, the goalkeeper spent much of his domestic career with Hanoi-based clubs, known for his agility and sharp reflexes. However, his legacy was cemented in 2008 during the ASEAN Football Championship (AFF Suzuki Cup). In a series of nail-biting matches, Sơn produced a string of critical saves, including a legendary performance in the two-legged final against Thailand. His heroics between the posts were the foundation of Vietnam's first-ever title, a victory that ignited nationwide celebrations and transformed the team into national heroes. After retiring, he moved into management, aiming to impart the discipline and big-match temperament that defined his own career.
