A powerful but injury-plagued running back who exploded onto the NFL scene with a monstrous, record-tying rookie season.
Doug Martin's NFL career was a story of spectacular peaks and frustrating valleys, defined by a rookie year so good it earned him the nickname 'The Muscle Hamster.' Drafted in the first round by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2012 out of Boise State, the compact, powerfully built back immediately silenced critics who questioned his size. In just his eighth professional game, he announced his arrival by rushing for 251 yards and four touchdowns against the Oakland Raiders, tying a league record for a rookie. That 2012 season saw him finish with over 1,900 total yards, landing him in the Pro Bowl and establishing him as a new star. What followed, however, was a struggle with consistency and injuries. Suspensions and ailments robbed him of his explosive burst, leading to journeyman seasons. Yet, in 2015, he fought back to lead the NFC in rushing, earning First-Team All-Pro honors and a second Pro Bowl nod, proving his talent was never in doubt, even if his body's durability was.
