A towering NBA defender who became a global humanitarian, using his fame to build a hospital in his native Congo.
Dikembe Mutombo arrived in the United States from the Democratic Republic of Congo on an academic scholarship, intending to become a doctor. His incredible height led him to basketball at Georgetown University, where he became a defensive force. His 18-year NBA career was a masterclass in intimidation, defined by his signature finger-wag after a blocked shot. He won four Defensive Player of the Year awards and retired as the league's second-all-time shot blocker. His impact off the court was even greater. He never forgot his roots, and in 2006, after years of relentless fundraising, he opened the Biamba Marie Mutombo Hospital in Kinshasa, named for his late mother. The $29 million facility, largely financed through his own efforts, provided critical care in a region that desperately needed it, transforming Mutombo from a sports star into a life-saving philanthropist.

The latchkey kids. Raised during divorce, recession, and the end of the Cold War. Skeptical, self-reliant, media-literate. They invented indie culture, grunge, and the early internet — then watched the Boomers take credit.
Dikembe was born in 1966, placing them squarely in the Generation X. The events that shaped this generation — economic uncertainty, the end of the Cold War, and the rise of personal computing — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
