An aeronautical engineer turned president, he steered Indonesia through a turbulent political transition with a technocrat's steady hand.
Bacharuddin Jusuf Habibie's life was a story of soaring ambition, both in the skies and in the halls of power. Born in Sulawesi, he left for Europe as a young man, earning a doctorate in aerospace engineering in Germany and becoming a key figure in aircraft design. His technical brilliance brought him to the attention of President Suharto, who brought him home and installed him as a minister and later vice president. In 1998, as Indonesia reeled from the Asian financial crisis and massive protests, Suharto resigned, thrusting Habibie into the presidency. His brief tenure was a whirlwind of democratic reform: he freed political prisoners, loosened press restrictions, and set the stage for Indonesia's first free elections in decades. Though his presidency lasted only 17 months, his calm, intellectual approach provided a crucial bridge from authoritarian rule to a more open society, forever marking him as the accidental architect of Indonesian democracy.
