A veterinarian turned political leader, he navigated Victoria's top job for a brief but consequential period marked by major infrastructure bets.
Denis Napthine's path to the premiership was an unconventional one, rooted in rural Victoria. Before politics, he was a practicing veterinarian, a background that informed his straightforward, community-focused approach. He entered state parliament in 1988, representing the southwestern region for over a quarter-century. His rise to the Liberal leadership, and thus the premiership in 2013, came after a sudden party spill. His tenure, though lasting just a year, was not without substance. Napthine staked his government on an ambitious transport agenda, championing the controversial East West Link road project in Melbourne. Defeated at the 2014 election, his time in office is remembered as a compact chapter of coalition government defined by a push for major development and the complexities of urban planning.

Denis was born in 1952, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
