A defensive mastermind who shaped Super Bowl-winning game plans for two different NFL dynasties.
Dean Pees didn't chase the spotlight, but his fingerprints are on some of the most formidable defenses of the 21st century. His coaching journey began in the college ranks, culminating in a tough six-year stint as head coach at Kent State. His true legacy, however, was forged in the NFL as a coordinator. Pees brought a cerebral, adaptable approach to defense, first helping Bill Belichick's New England Patriots construct units that reached two Super Bowls. After a brief retirement, he returned to orchestrate the Baltimore Ravens' defense during a period of sustained excellence, contributing to another championship run. His rare career saw him call defensive plays for four different franchises, earning respect for his strategic depth and ability to develop players at every stop.

Dean was born in 1949, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
