The original, harried Darrin Stephens on 'Bewitched,' whose career was tragically cut short by a debilitating back injury.
Dick York's acting career was one of promising depth cut painfully short. A radio actor from childhood, he moved seamlessly into television and film in the 1950s, showing a knack for playing earnest, everyman figures. His most famous role came in 1964 as Darrin Stephens, the flustered mortal husband of a witch on the smash sitcom 'Bewitched.' York brought a genuine, beleaguered charm to the part, making Darrin's exasperation feel relatable rather than cartoonish. His performance in the film 'Inherit the Wind' as the persecuted teacher Bertram Cates demonstrated his serious dramatic chops. However, a severe back injury from a 1959 film stunt worsened over time, forcing him to leave 'Bewitched' in 1969. He spent much of his later life in chronic pain, dedicating himself to a charity for the homeless until his death, leaving behind a legacy of what might have been.

Dick was born in 1928, placing them squarely in The Silent Generation. The events that shaped this generation — world wars, depression, and rapid industrialization — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
