Biography
Dave Cutler is the definitive engineer's engineer, a figure whose work forms the unseen bedrock of digital life. Born in Lansing, Michigan, he cut his teeth at Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) in the 1970s, leading the creation of the RSX-11M and, crucially, the VMS operating system for the VAX minicomputers—a system celebrated for its robustness and influence. Microsoft, seeking to build a serious, industrial-strength OS, famously recruited him in 1988. Cutler led the team that built Windows NT from the ground up, a project initially dubbed 'NT' for his DEC team's new technology. His philosophy of rigorous design, performance, and security became the DNA of NT, which evolved into the foundation for every modern Windows version, from servers to desktops. A famously private and demanding leader, Cutler's legacy is a world that runs, largely unseen, on code shaped by his uncompromising vision.
