The frenetic, unpredictable frontman of The Vines, whose explosive garage-rock anthems briefly made him the face of a global garage rock revival in the early 2000s.
Craig Nicholls erupted onto the international music scene in 2002 as a whirlwind of tangled hair, jerky movements, and raw, melodic noise. As the singer, guitarist, and sole constant songwriter for The Vines, he channeled a deep love for 60s garage rock and 90s alternative into short, sharp anthems like 'Get Free' and 'Ride.' The band's debut album, 'Highly Evolved,' was a critical and commercial smash, packaged by media as part of the 'The' bands movement alongside The Strokes and The Hives. Nicholls, however, was an unstable center of the storm. His live performances were famously volatile, veering from intense focus to complete disintegration, a reflection of his then-undiagnosed Asperger's syndrome. While subsequent albums contained flashes of his hook-filled genius, the band's momentum was hampered by his struggles with the pressures of fame and his condition. Nicholls retreated from the spotlight, but continued to write and record as The Vines, releasing music on his own terms. His legacy is that of a brilliant, troubled auteur who captured a specific, frenzied guitar-rock energy that defined a moment, even as he personally buckled under its weight.

The latchkey kids. Raised during divorce, recession, and the end of the Cold War. Skeptical, self-reliant, media-literate. They invented indie culture, grunge, and the early internet — then watched the Boomers take credit.
Craig was born in 1977, placing them squarely in the Generation X. The events that shaped this generation — economic uncertainty, the end of the Cold War, and the rise of personal computing — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
