A Dutch literary sensation whose intense, philosophical novels dissect the obsessions of brilliant minds and the nature of love itself.
Connie Palmen announced herself with a literary thunderclap. Her 1991 debut novel, 'The Laws,' was a sensation in the Netherlands, winning the prestigious AKO Literature Prize for a first novel. Written in a cool, analytical prose that belied its passionate core, it established her signature style: intellectually rigorous explorations of love, genius, and identity, often through the lens of a relationship with a famous figure. She built on this with 'The Friendship,' a novel about the bond between philosopher Simone Weil and Gustave Thibon. Palmen's own life became intertwined with her work when she married the celebrated Dutch writer and columnist Ischa Meijer, whose sudden death in 1995 left a profound mark. Her later masterpiece, 'You Are My Mother,' is a fictionalized account of the life of psychiatrist and writer F. Bouwman. Palmen's work refuses easy sentiment, instead offering a stark, compelling, and deeply intelligent examination of the human heart.
