A burly, deep-voiced character actor who became a familiar face of rugged authority and menace across decades of television westerns and dramas.
With a formidable frame and a voice that could rumble like distant thunder, Claude Akins was a fixture on American television screens for over three decades. After serving in the Army Signal Corps in World War II and studying at Northwestern University, he began a film career often typecast as heavies and villains in movies like 'The Killers' and 'Rio Bravo.' It was on the small screen, however, where he found his true niche. He became a go-to actor for roles requiring a blend of toughness and a rough-hewn charm, appearing in hundreds of episodes of series from 'The Twilight Zone' to 'The Love Boat.' He found his most enduring fame as the good-hearted trucker Sonny Pruitt in 'Movin' On' and later as the scheming but comical title character in 'The Misadventures of Sheriff Lobo.' Akins embodied a certain kind of American masculinity—gruff, capable, and often unexpectedly sentimental.
