A lifelong soldier and party stalwart who presided over Laos's cautious economic opening while maintaining its strict one-party communist system.
Choummaly Sayasone's life has been inextricably linked to the Lao People's Revolutionary Party, which he joined as a young man fighting in the revolutionary struggle. His career was built within the military and party apparatus, where loyalty and discretion were paramount. Rising through the ranks of the Lao People's Army, he eventually became its commander-in-chief, a position that solidified his power base. When he succeeded Khamtai Siphandon as state president and party chief in 2006, it signaled a continuation rather than a change. His decade at the helm saw Laos deepen its economic ties with neighbors like Vietnam and China, and formally join the World Trade Organization. His rule was characterized by stability and incremental development, but also by the firm suppression of dissent, maintaining the country's isolation from democratic movements.

Born between the Depression and the end of WWII. Too young to fight, old enough to remember. They became the conformist middle managers of the 1950s — and the civil rights leaders who quietly dismantled Jim Crow.
Choummaly was born in 1936, placing them squarely in The Silent Generation. The events that shaped this generation — world wars, depression, and rapid industrialization — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
