A brilliantly observant comic writer and performer who gave Britain two of its most beloved and painfully funny television characters.
Caroline Aherne, born in 1963 in London but raised in Manchester, had a voice and a eye that defined 1990s British comedy. After starting in local radio, she co-created and starred in 'The Mrs Merton Show,' where her elderly, sweetly brutal chat show host became a national sensation. Her greater triumph was 'The Royle Family,' the groundbreaking sitcom she co-wrote and starred in with Craig Cash. Set entirely in a Manchester living room, it found profound humor in the mundane, its naturalistic dialogue and lack of a laugh track revolutionizing the genre. Aherne's personal life was marked by struggles with depression, alcoholism, and eye cancer, which she faced from childhood. Despite this, her work remained piercingly sharp and deeply humane. She later provided the narration for the hit reality show 'Gogglebox.' Her death from cancer in 2016 at 52 cut short a life of extraordinary comic genius that found truth in the ordinary.
1946–1964
The largest generation in history at the time. Shaped by postwar prosperity, the Vietnam War, the sexual revolution, and Watergate. They questioned every institution their parents built — then ran them.
Caroline was born in 1963, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
