Biography

Carlisle Floyd did not just write operas; he built them from the ground up, crafting both the music and the words to tell stories rooted in the soil of the American South. At a time when American opera was finding its feet, his 1955 work 'Susannah' struck with the force of revelation. Transferring a biblical tale to rural Tennessee, he created a potent drama of innocence, hypocrisy, and community judgment, set to music that wove folk hymns into a sweeping orchestral language. The opera became a phenomenon, the most performed American opera of its time. Floyd, a South Carolina native and long-time teacher, continued to mine the region's history and psyche in works like 'Of Mice and Men' and 'Cold Sassy Tree', proving that operatic grandeur could be forged from plain speech and local color. He taught generations of composers, insisting that compelling theater was as important as musical innovation.

Carlisle was born in 1926, placing them squarely in The Greatest Generation. The events that shaped this generation — world wars, depression, and rapid industrialization — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
