Biography

Albert Schweitzer lived a life of profound duality, achieving mastery in three distinct fields before choosing a path of radical service. By his thirties, he was an acclaimed organist and authority on Bach, a respected theologian, and a published philosopher. Yet, he felt a calling to address tangible suffering. At 30, he began medical studies, and in 1913, with his wife, a nurse, he traveled to Lambaréné in French Equatorial Africa (now Gabon). There, in the jungle, he built a hospital from the ground up, funding his work through concert tours and writings. His philosophy, 'Reverence for Life,' became the bedrock of his existence, arguing that ethical humans extend compassion to all living creatures. For decades, he was the hospital's physician, surgeon, administrator, and spiritual center, a testament to the power of an idea lived, not just professed.

Baby Boomers

1946–1964

The largest generation in history at the time. Shaped by postwar prosperity, the Vietnam War, the sexual revolution, and Watergate. They questioned every institution their parents built — then ran them.

Carl was born in 1948, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
