A fiery and technically gifted Turkish left-back known for his powerful runs and set-piece delivery, who carved a path across Europe's leagues.
Caner Erkin announced himself as a prodigy in Turkey, making his professional debut for Manisaspor at just 16. His potent blend of attacking verve from the left-back position and a dangerous left foot quickly made him a target for bigger clubs. A move to CSKA Moscow in 2010 placed him on a European stage, where he won the Russian Premier League and contributed to domestic cup wins, his crossing and free-kicks becoming a staple. His career became a tour of major leagues—a stint in Italy with Inter Milan, a return to Turkey with Beşiktaş where he won a Süper Lig title, and a challenging spell in England with Watford. Erkin’s style was never that of a cautious defender; he was an engine on the flank, capable of sublime passes and occasional defensive lapses, mirroring his passionate and sometimes temperamental on-field presence. With over 50 caps for Turkey, his international career had similar highs and controversies, but his longevity and technical quality kept him relevant in the Turkish top flight into his late thirties.
