A hulking, gentle giant of European cinema who solved problems with comedic punches and endless sandwiches.
Born Carlo Pedersoli, Bud Spencer found fame not through one career, but several. He was first an elite athlete, competing as a swimmer in two Olympic Games and playing water polo at an international level. In his 30s, he reinvented himself as an actor, adopting the stage name Bud Spencer on a producer's suggestion. Paired with the quicker Terence Hill, he created a beloved cinematic duo for the 1970s and 80s. Spencer played the lovable, physically imposing brawler who preferred eating to fighting, often ending scenes with a pile of knocked-out henchmen and a satisfied grin. His films, a mix of Westerns and modern action comedies, were pure, unpretentious fun that made him a folk hero across Europe and beyond.

Born between the Depression and the end of WWII. Too young to fight, old enough to remember. They became the conformist middle managers of the 1950s — and the civil rights leaders who quietly dismantled Jim Crow.
Bud was born in 1929, placing them squarely in The Silent Generation. The events that shaped this generation — world wars, depression, and rapid industrialization — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
