An Italian conductor who shaped the sound of Chicago's opera for over half a century, championing both classic and new works.
Bruno Bartoletti's career was a masterclass in artistic loyalty and expansive taste. Hailing from Sesto Fiorentino, he developed an early passion for opera and honed his craft in post-war Italy. His big break came not at home, but in Chicago in 1956, when he stepped in to conduct 'Madama Butterfly.' The city and the conductor found their match. For the next 51 years, Bartoletti was the musical heartbeat of the Lyric Opera of Chicago, serving as its artistic director and principal conductor. He built the company's reputation on thrilling performances of the Italian canon, from Verdi to Puccini, but his vision was never nostalgic. He aggressively programmed contemporary works, believing a living art form needed new voices. Simultaneously, he held leadership roles at Rome's opera house and the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, weaving a transatlantic life dedicated to elevating the form he loved.
