The rhythmic architect of Fugazi's explosive sound, his precise, inventive drumming provided the foundation for a band that defied every music industry rule.
Brendan Canty was more than Fugazi's drummer; he was the band's rhythmic conscience and a key part of its operational engine. His style, a potent mix of punk aggression, funk syncopation, and jazz-like improvisation, gave the band's complex songs their unmistakable drive and swing. Offstage, his contributions were equally vital. He co-founded the band's independent label, Dischord Records, and was instrumental in crafting its fiercely ethical approach to touring, recording, and engaging with fans. A multi-instrumentalist and prolific collaborator, Canty has also scored films and performed with numerous other projects. But his legacy is inextricably tied to the seismic, controlled chaos of Fugazi's live shows, where his drumming was both a anchor and a catalyst.

The latchkey kids. Raised during divorce, recession, and the end of the Cold War. Skeptical, self-reliant, media-literate. They invented indie culture, grunge, and the early internet — then watched the Boomers take credit.
