Biography

Born William Henry Pratt in London, Boris Karloff adopted his stage name and embarked on a long, unremarkable career in silent films before a single role at age 44 changed everything. His performance as the Creature in James Whale's 'Frankenstein' was a revelation—a hulking, bolt-necked figure whose childlike confusion and yearning for connection elicited unexpected pity. Karloff understood that true horror stemmed from pathos, not just menace. This philosophy carried him through a defining run of Universal monster classics and later, a graceful second act as a gentle character actor. His resonant, weary voice found perfect expression narrating 'How the Grinch Stole Christmas!', proving his appeal stretched far beyond the foggy graveyards where he made his name.

The Lost Generation

1883–1900

Came of age during World War I. Disillusioned by the carnage, they rejected the certainties of the Victorian era and built modernism from the wreckage — in art, literature, and politics.

Boris was born in 1887, placing them squarely in The Lost Generation. The events that shaped this generation — world wars, depression, and rapid industrialization — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
