A Swedish troubadour whose guitar became a megaphone for socialist ideals and the raw poetry of everyday life.
Björn Afzelius emerged from the Swedish folk revival of the 1970s as a voice that refused to be quiet. More than a musician, he was a political storyteller, weaving narratives of love, loss, and staunch socialist conviction into his songs. His deep, gravelly voice and acoustic guitar provided the soundtrack for a generation of Swedes engaged in political struggle, and his unwavering support for figures like Prime Minister Olof Palme cemented his role as a cultural commentator. Afzelius never shied from controversy, using his platform to challenge injustice both at home and abroad, particularly against apartheid in South America. Though his life was cut short by cancer, his anthems about solidarity and human fragility remain deeply woven into Sweden's national fabric, sung at rallies and in quiet rooms alike.
1946–1964
The largest generation in history at the time. Shaped by postwar prosperity, the Vietnam War, the sexual revolution, and Watergate. They questioned every institution their parents built — then ran them.
Björn was born in 1947, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
