Biography

Bette Nesmith Graham was an artist at heart, working as a executive secretary in Dallas when she had her flash of insight. Watching sign painters seamlessly cover errors, she realized the electric typewriter's unforgiving ink needed a similar fix. In her blender, she mixed a water-based tempera paint to match her stationery, using a fine brush to correct typos. Her boss never noticed, but other secretaries wanted the 'Mistake Out.' What began as a side hustle, bottled in her garage with her son's help, became the Liquid Paper Company. Graham navigated male-dominated industries, patenting her formula and fending off corporate giant Gillette, which had copied her product. She ran her company with progressive policies, including profit-sharing and on-site childcare. After selling the business for millions, she devoted her wealth and energy to supporting women artists and entrepreneurs, leaving a legacy defined by practical creativity and quiet resilience.
