A brilliant legal mind and political survivor whose career became a mirror of the Philippines' turbulent 20th-century history.
Arturo Tolentino’s life was a masterclass in navigating the treacherous waters of Philippine politics. A lawyer of sharp intellect, he rose to become Senate President in the mid-1960s, respected for his constitutional expertise. His story took a dramatic turn two decades later when he agreed to be Ferdinand Marcos's vice-presidential candidate in the 1986 snap election, a decision that placed him at the epicenter of the People Power Revolution. Following Marcos's ouster, Tolentino even briefly claimed the presidency in a quixotic act of loyalty to the old regime. Yet his legacy is more complex than that final chapter; he was a statesman who served as Foreign Secretary and remained a formidable, if controversial, figure whose career was inextricably linked with the nation's democratic struggles.
