Biography
Arthur Oldham possessed a rare gift for transforming groups of individual singers into instruments of breathtaking power and clarity. His career was built not on solo performances, but on foundation-laying. In 1965, he was tasked with creating the Edinburgh Festival Chorus from scratch, molding it into a world-class ensemble in mere months. This set a pattern: he became the go-to builder for major orchestras seeking a choral voice. He conjured the Choruses of the Orchestre de Paris and Amsterdam's Concertgebouw, each bearing his hallmark of disciplined blend and emotional depth. As director of the London Symphony Chorus, his work on landmark recordings like Berlioz's 'The Trojans' earned three Grammy Awards. While known as a choirmaster, he was also a composer of sacred music, his own works informed by the same structural integrity he demanded from his singers.
