Biography

Arnold Ruge was a man of letters with a revolutionary temper, a Hegelian philosopher who believed ideas must ignite political action. Imprisoned in his youth for his liberal nationalist fervor, he channeled his energy into publishing, creating the influential 'Halle Yearbooks' and later the 'German-French Yearbooks' alongside a young Karl Marx. These publications became nerve centers for the 'Young Hegelians,' dissecting religion and politics with a sharp, critical edge. When the 1848 revolutions erupted, Ruge plunged into the Frankfurt Parliament, advocating for a democratic Germany. The revolution's failure sent him into a long English exile, where his voice, once central, gradually faded from the continental scene. His legacy is that of a crucial agitator and connector, the publisher who provided the platform for the most radical ideas of his age to clash and coalesce.
