A neurosurgeon thrust into Haiti's highest office during a period of catastrophic political collapse and gang violence.
Ariel Henry’s path to power was as unlikely as it was unenviable. For decades, he was a respected neurosurgeon and political insider, serving in various ministerial roles. His destiny changed abruptly in July 2021 when President Jovenel Moïse was assassinated. Just days before the killing, Moïse had named Henry as Haiti's next prime minister. He was swiftly sworn in as acting prime minister, inheriting a nation in freefall. With the presidency vacant, Henry became the country's de facto leader, presiding over a Council of Ministers while navigating international pressure, a humanitarian crisis, and a paralyzing surge in gang power. His tenure was defined by his inability to return home; in 2024, while traveling abroad to secure support, armed gangs seized control of Port-au-Prince's infrastructure, trapping him outside the country. Facing an impossible situation and mounting calls for his resignation, he stepped down, his term ending not with an election but with a negotiated exit, underscoring the profound instability that has gripped Haiti.

Ariel was born in 1949, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
