A relentless Spanish republican who spent his life crafting a radical democratic theory to dismantle the political corruption he saw entrenched after Franco.
Born in 1927 in Alhama de Granada, Antonio García-Trevijano was shaped by the repressive atmosphere of Franco's Spain. Trained as a lawyer and notary, his sharp legal mind and deep philosophical streak turned him into a formidable intellectual opponent of the dictatorship. Unlike many who sought compromise, García-Trevijano argued for a complete break, advocating for a genuine republic based on what he termed 'real democracy'—a system where political parties would not control the state. After Franco's death, he became a fierce critic of Spain's transition to a constitutional monarchy, which he viewed as a continuation of oligarchic power under a democratic veneer. His writings and his leadership of the 'Republican Social Movement' positioned him as a polarizing but influential thinker, a constant thorn in the side of the political establishment until his death in 2018.
