A stoic Indian batsman who became a respected coach, famously weathering a barrage from the West Indies' fiercest pace attack in a display of sheer courage.
Anshuman Gaekwad’s cricket was not about flamboyance, but about an almost serene resilience. Following in his father Datta’s footsteps into the Indian Test team, he carved his own identity as an opening batsman of immense concentration. His career highlight was an act of extraordinary fortitude: in 1976, on a treacherous Kingston pitch, he batted for over seven hours against the terrifying pace of Andy Roberts, Michael Holding, and Wayne Daniel, scoring a painstaking 81 runs covered in bruises. That innings defined him. After retirement, he transitioned into coaching, serving two stints as head coach of the national team. His tenure included guiding India to a co-champions title at the 2000 ICC KnockOut Trophy. Gaekwad was a bridge between eras, a player from the time of uncovered pitches who helped mentor the next generation of Indian stars with quiet, understated wisdom.
1946–1964
The largest generation in history at the time. Shaped by postwar prosperity, the Vietnam War, the sexual revolution, and Watergate. They questioned every institution their parents built — then ran them.
Anshuman was born in 1952, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
