A sharp-witted Scottish Tory leader who brought pragmatism and dry humor to a party struggling for relevance in devolved politics.
Annabel Goldie emerged from the world of Scottish law, a partner in a firm, before stepping into the political arena just as the Scottish Parliament was being reconvened. Her tenure as leader of the Scottish Conservatives, from 2005 to 2011, was defined by a canny realism. Operating in a landscape where her party was often the underdog, she deployed a disarming blend of principle and pragmatism, famously offering the SNP government 'a hand, not a white flag.' Her straight-talking, often wryly humorous style made her a distinctive and respected figure, even among opponents. Later, as a Minister of State for Defence in the House of Lords, she brought the same no-nonsense approach to UK government, overseeing significant military procurement projects until 2023.

The largest generation in history at the time. Shaped by postwar prosperity, the Vietnam War, the sexual revolution, and Watergate. They questioned every institution their parents built — then ran them.
Annabel was born in 1950, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
