A diplomatic powerhouse who shaped Vatican policy for decades as the Pope's chief advisor and the dean of the cardinals.
Angelo Sodano's career was a masterclass in Vatican diplomacy and bureaucratic ascent. Ordained in 1950, he spent over two decades in the diplomatic service, with postings in South America that informed his later views. Pope John Paul II brought him to the center of power, appointing him Cardinal Secretary of State in 1991. For fifteen years, Sodano was the operational head of the Holy See, managing its international relations during the fall of communism and the post-9/11 world. His tenure was marked by a staunchly conservative, realpolitik approach, advocating dialogue with regimes like China and Cuba. After John Paul II's death, he continued as Dean of the College of Cardinals, presiding over the conclaves that elected Benedict XVI and Francis. His long influence, however, was later shadowed by criticism over his handling of the clerical abuse crisis.
