Biography

Aneurin 'Nye' Bevan was a product of the South Wales coalfield, his socialism forged in the dark, dangerous pits and the hardship he witnessed. Elected as Labour MP for Ebbw Vale in 1929, he was a brilliant orator with a simmering rage against inequality. During the Second World War, his scathing critiques of Churchill made him a thorn in the government's side. But his moment came in 1945, when Clement Attlee's landslide victory put Bevan in charge of health. Facing fierce opposition from doctors and conservatives, he fought, cajoled, and negotiated with a political cunning that belied his radical image. On July 5, 1948, the National Health Service was born, offering free healthcare for all, funded by taxation. Bevan's creation was a revolutionary compact between state and citizen, and despite later resigning over prescription charges, his legacy is the enduring principle that care should be based on need, not wealth.

The Lost Generation

1883–1900

Came of age during World War I. Disillusioned by the carnage, they rejected the certainties of the Victorian era and built modernism from the wreckage — in art, literature, and politics.

Aneurin was born in 1897, placing them squarely in The Lost Generation. The events that shaped this generation — world wars, depression, and rapid industrialization — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
