Biography

Andy Bechtolsheim's story is one of Silicon Valley archetype: the brilliant engineer-entrepreneur. Arriving at Stanford for graduate studies, he built a powerful workstation from spare parts to solve his own computing needs. That machine, dubbed the SUN workstation (for Stanford University Network), became the genesis of Sun Microsystems, the company he co-founded in 1982. As chief hardware designer, Bechtolsheim's elegant, powerful systems gave engineers and software developers unprecedented computational muscle, fueling the rise of computer-aided design and the early internet, which often ran on Sun servers. After leaving Sun, he became a serial founder and one of the most astute angel investors in tech history. His very first $100,000 check to a then-unknown startup called Google, signed before the company was legally incorporated, exemplifies his knack for seeing potential where others see only risk. His career traces the arc of modern computing from academic labs to world-changing enterprise.

Baby Boomers

1946–1964

The largest generation in history at the time. Shaped by postwar prosperity, the Vietnam War, the sexual revolution, and Watergate. They questioned every institution their parents built — then ran them.

Andy was born in 1955, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
