A powerhouse vocalist who shattered Broadway's gender binary, becoming the first non-binary performer to win a Tony Award.
Alex Newell didn't just arrive on stage; they commanded it with a voice of staggering power and a presence that defies categorization. First gaining attention on the television show 'The Glee Project,' Newell was brought onto 'Glee' as Unique Adams, a transgender teen whose performances were show-stopping declarations of self. This role was a harbinger of a career built on breaking molds. On Broadway, they brought a raw, roof-raising energy to the goddess Asaka in 'Once on This Island.' But it was in the cornfield comedy 'Shucked' that Newell made history. Their performance as the whiskey-distilling, no-nonsense Lulu earned them a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical. In winning, Newell and co-nominee J. Harrison Ghee became the first openly non-binary actors to receive and win Tony Awards. More than a milestone, it was a moment of profound visibility, proving that immense talent and authentic identity are not just compatible but combustible when mixed on a Broadway stage.
