Alejandro Amenábar announced himself not as a filmmaker, but as a full-blown auteur, a one-man creative engine who wrote, directed, and scored his own films with startling confidence from the very start. Born in Santiago but shaped in Madrid, he bypassed traditional film school, teaching himself by devouring classics and composing music.
