A formidable Brazilian center-back whose aerial dominance and tough tackling anchored defenses in Portugal, Brazil, and beyond.
Alcides, full name Alcides da Silva Fonseca, carved out a respected career as a defensive bulwark, traveling from his native Brazil to become a familiar figure in Portuguese football. Standing with imposing physical presence, his game was built on clear strengths: winning crucial headers and executing decisive clearances. After early years in Brazil, his move to Portugal's Naval 1º de Maio proved transformative, leading to a significant transfer to Sporting Clube de Braga. At Braga, he became a defensive mainstay during a successful period, helping the club secure European qualification and contest domestic cup finals. His no-nonsense style later took him to Greece and back to Brazil, where he provided veteran leadership for clubs like Vitória and Atlético Goianiense. While not a frequent goalscorer, his rare strikes were often memorable, and his primary contribution was always the solidity and organizational command he brought to the heart of the defense for over a decade at a high level.
